Caspary Weekend

We spent the weekend at the Caspary Lodge. The weather was wonderful, the house in its usual splendor and the drive up was uneventful. Perfect conditions aside, it is always difficult for me to spend time there without the rest of my family; a certain pang of emptiness seems to pervade all activity. My mother, hand on one hip, hovering over the expansive stove is palpably absent from the kitchen. Equally missed is my dad sitting at the table, mulling over the day's possibilities. The sprawling main room feels so crowded with the memories of times past that there is almost no air to breathe. My sister Sarah's laugh echoes through house, and I can hear her husband exclaiming over a lost game of cribbage, my niece giggling on the balcony above us, my other siblings and dear ones finding quiet retreat on the porch.
Going to the Caspary with just the three of us feels like a little like skipping dinner and heading straight for dessert; decidedly delicious, but missing something.
Of course we don't spend all of our time pining for times gone by. Katelyn keeps us on our toes, and laughing all the way. In the main room there is some delightful century old taxidermy, one of which is a moose. And so sweet Kate adds the word moose to her vocabulary with her own twist of sass.

Betsy,
Your words are so poetic that they make tears spring to my eyes as I remember the beauty of the Caspary Lodge and the fun that we had with your family last summer.
